Purpose of this assignment

Able to illustrate the principles of manufacturing systems engineering and their relevance to the design and enhancement of manufacturing systems and use a range of analysis tools, including value stream mapping, to determine the effectiveness and efficiency of a manufacturing system, and then develop an appropriate future state for that system. Also able to outline the impact of different production planning approaches on the effectiveness of a manufacturing system and review the functions of manufacturing systems engineering and how they enable successful organisations to remain competitive.

Scenario 1
You are working in an Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C. (Alba), Kingdom of Bahrain, the company is manufacturing aluminium products, which is supplied to worldwide and local customers. As a manufacturing system supervisor in your organisation, you have been asked by your manager to describe the principles of manufacturing systems engineering that are used by the company, relevance, and enhancement to the design of the manufacturing products. Lean theory has been introduced the process of eliminate unwanted processing time from company. And you have been asked to use a range of analysis tools, including value stream mapping, to determine the effectiveness and efficiency of a manufacturing system and then develop an appropriate future state VSM for that system. Your company continually striving to increase productivity and output of their operations. Based on the above scenario answer the following task.

Task 1
Illustrate the principles of manufacturing systems engineering, explain the relevance of quality, cost, delivery performance and optimising output to the design of a manufacturing systems engineering and evaluate the impact of managing complexity, mass customisation, maintenance scheduling and planning, resources planning and productivity on the success of manufacturing organisation by applying VSM.

Task 2
The ALBA company manufactures aluminium open mould 22.5 kg standard ingots shown in Figure 1, which are used in automotive industry for manufacturing high quality wheels and other chassis components, the demand per shift is 200 tonnes, effective number of available working hours per shift is 8 hrs. The demand comes from local automotive industries to production planning department of ALBA company, then PPC department send its raw material requirement to supplier/inventory department by manually or by electronic media. In present case the ALBA company keeps the raw material (alumina) in the supermarket and pull to the processes like smelting, tapping, casting and inspection & dispatch. Production process details regarding inventory, average cycle time(c/t), and average change over time (c/o), number of operators and distance travelled by material are shown in Tablel against every process.

Scenario 2
You are working in an Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C. (Alba), the company is manufacturing aluminium products, which is supplied to worldwide and local customers. You are working as a manufacturing system supervisor in your organisation, you have been asked by your manager to write a report that evaluates three different approaches that are commonly used highlighting the pros and cons of each. And also, you have been asked to write a report that evaluate the functions of manufacturing systems engineering and assess them how they are successful in the organisations. Assume the above scenario to answer the following tasks.

Task 3
Identify the common production planning approaches used in your company, specify their impacts on manufacturing systems, evaluate the effectiveness with advantages and limitations of each production planning approach and explore the effectiveness of common production planning techniques and then provide a recommendation of where each of the reviewed approaches are most appropriate and give precisely the types of manufacturing approach such as make to stock, make to order and engineer to order. Finally, justify the most appropriate production planning technique and its suitability for a particular manufacturing approach.

Task 4
Review a role description of a manufacturing systems engineer, identify the core skills required, main tasks and responsibilities of a manufacturing system engineer, identify the key contributing successful factors of a manufacturing execution system and evaluate how they are impact on successful manufacturing organisations. Finally, discuss critically the elements of an existing manufacturing execution system and provide a recommendation of why this is successful.
