Learning Outcome 1: Identify the different mechanical properties of different structural materials and to choose the best option for a specific given application.
Learning Outcome 2: Explain the methods and techniques used in civil engineering for earthworks and substructures.
Learning Outcome 3: Present a site safety plan, risk assessment and method statement for a given civil engineering activity.
Learning Outcome 4: Evaluate a given civil engineering infrastructure problem and prepare a concept design proposal for a project to solve the problem.
The Scenario
You are working as a civil engineer in a constructing company. The company has been awarded a tender for a project located in Irbid Area in the north of Jordan. The project consists of two stages: The first one is establishing four multi-story buildings that will serve as university dormitories to serve students studying at Jordan University of Science and Technology. Each building consists of 3 above ground floors and 2 basement floors. The soil report states that the water table is 3.5 m deep, the soil is expansive and cohesion and the strong soil strata is located at depth of 7 m in a part of the land plot and it remains cohesion in another part. A note in the tender agenda also stated that some projects in the neighborhood were delayed due to the ground water issue. Also the area experiences incidents of flash floods in the rainy season that cause flooding in the area especially at the entrance of the dormitories compound.
The second stage is constructing a new highway between Yarmouk University and Jordan University of Science and Technology. As a part of the engineering team who is working on the project, the project manager assigned you the following tasks:
Assignment One: Part one
Task 1: Establishing Four multi-story RC dormitories buildings (project profile) As part of the planning process, you have been asked to compile a project profile for the excavations, earthworks and groundwater control to establish four multi-story dormitory buildings in the area, that will be used as residents for JUST university students.
Submittal/ Deliverable: your report should show the following
1. Identify structural materials used for the construction of the four building in the selected area.
2. Describe methods and techniques used in constructing of the buildings in the selected area.
3. Discuss earthworks activities, equipments and techniques used to accomplish the required construction of the four multi-story dormitory buildings.
4. Describe methods and techniques used to create the suitable type of foundations of the buildings in case the ground water was encountered and knowing that the soil is cohesion.
5. As mentioned, the area where the project is to be constructed, experiences many incidents of flash floods. Thus, you need to describe methods and techniques used in culvert construction that will be used to drain the runoff water from the dorms entrance.
6. Analyze methods and techniques used in large complex earthmoving operations and deep excavations of the project.
7. Evaluate using the reinforced concrete structure versus steel in building the dormities (refering to case studies from literature).
8. Evaluate methods and techniques used to deal with issues of ground and slope stability of the basement floors at the project area.
Assignment One: Part Two
Task 2: Prepare a design proposal for a new highway that connects between Yarmouk University and Jordan University of Science and Technology, as shown in Figure 1. The highway is supposed to be bituminous, three lane-Two-way highway with a design speed of 90 Km/hr that will serve surrounding community and facilitate the mobility between both universities for students and staff. Use Google earth maps to select the best route option.
Submittal/ Deliverable: Your presentation should cover the following
1. Describe the materials used in the specific highway project in the area above.
2. Critically analyze the use of solid versus flexible pavement materials in highway construction.
3. Develop a civil engineering concept design proposal for the new highway project that connects between Yarmouk and JUST universities.
4. Describe methods and techniques used in the design of the new highway project.
5. Analyze methods and techniques used to create the new flexible highway project.
6. Justify the selection of flexible pavement in the development highway connecting between Yarmouk and JUST universities.
Task 3: Health and Safety Issues
You have been asked to compile a booklet explaining the roles and responsibilities of those involved in the construction of either of the projects outlined above (i.e. the four dormitories or the highway connecting Yarmouk and JUST Universities).
Submittal/ Deliverable: Your presentation should cover the following
1. Identify the hazards, risks and safety arrangements for excavations, working on structures, working in confined spaces, and for working within temporary works on highways (select the hazards related to your project).
2. Develop and present a site safety plan, risk assessments and method statements for the hazards identified previously for your project.
3. Discuss health & safety legislations and codes of practice related to civil engineering sites used locally or internationally.
4. Give a proper justification for your safety plan risk assessments and method statements and make them aligned with your local legislations or with any international safety code of practice.
