Topic - Role of Communication and Negotiation Skills in Project
You have been hired as Project Manager in Oman XYZ Company and you have been given task to manage one of largest projects in the organization. After two months corona virus pandemic started in Oman.There were many decisions of the Supreme Committee that affected the methods of communication in the project, such as reducing the number of employees in offices and working from home, preventing gathering, preventing movement between the regions and lockdown . The General Manager asked you to convince different departments' employees to use new methods and channel to communicate as you have wide experience in IT implementation and new technology channel can be suitable for the situation.
This is a major shift from previous communication methodas and channel , and it requires training and support to all employees.
The new change will reduce the impact of the pandemic to the project and will insure that the organization follow the government rule. There has been lot of reluctance and resistant from employees. It is a huge task, and you are worried how to solve these issues. In another instance, you attended meeting and presentation by CEO with other prominent members. In this meeting you came to know that your company has expanded to 5 different markets in other countries. There are around 1000 employees overseas and more than 1 million customers worldwide. You are quite impressed by the strategic goals of the company. Later in the discussions it was highlighted that company is facing lot of communication challenges and they include the following:
1. Unproductive and ineffective use of social media and other communication apps
2. No feedback from clients on ways to improve product quality and service delivery as such.
3. Misunderstandings and lack of trust based upon intercultural
Being in Project Management field for long time, you have quickly realized that company is going to have great difficulty in managing various operations and day to day work internally and externally. In this regard, your CEO called you and asked you to do the following tasks to enable effective communication and strategies to improve communication. He feels your experience and knowledge will help the organization in current situation. You have prepared the following set of questions to deal with ongoing issues and problems. You must prepare a report for the CEO for the same. The General Manager asked you to convince different departments' employees to use new methods and channels to communicate as you have wide experience in IT implementation
Question 1: Analyse the objections from the employees for the new communication methods and channel implementation (list any 3 objections)
Question 2: Prepare 3 strategies to overcome these objections with suitable examples.
Question 3: What would be your negotiation process for the new communication methods and channel implementation? What will be your BATNA? Give your point of view.
Question 4:Develop 2 strategies/plan for each of the problem listed below:
• Unproductive and ineffective use of social media and communication apps
• No feedback from clients on ways to improve product quality and service
• Misunderstandings and lack of trust based upon intercultural communication issues in different contexts.
